Sunday trip to Marmore Falls

Every year when the school ends childrens and parents are going on a one day trip. This time the schedule was to visit the Narni Fortress and the Marmore Falls, both places in Umbria, Italy.

Starting the early morning we stop first to discover the pleasant surprise, a tour of the medieval fortress, where the kids played the game of the five senses: touch, sight, hearing, smell and taste. The rooms of the fortress are 14: costume room, weapons room, musical instruments room, banquet room and others where you can meet noble ladies and noble knights. After our picnic lunch it’s time for the entrance in a big natural park were we find the Marmore Falls, one of the highest in Europe, with a difference of 165m. , divided i 3 jumps. The water of the falls is used to produce hydroelectric energy, there is a controlled flow and the timetables for the release of the water. You can reach the falls from two entrances, from the Upper Outlook and from the Lower Outlook. The natural park presents 6 trails with easy, medium and hight difficulty. The easier is trail number 3 with a lengh of 150 meters , 20 minutes travel time and 15 meters difference in height. The hardest, only for some of us 😉 is trail numer 6 with a lengh of 1000 meters, 1 hour up and 45 minutes down , his difference in hight is 160 meters.

Lover’s Balcony is situated in the middle of the trail number 1 ; to reach the point during the opening of the water it is recommend the use of a raincoat or ponchos that you can find on sale by the bookshop that you will find in the ticket office.

From the Upper Outlook of the Falls you can see a wonderful sight of the first drop, the rainbow of Marmore Falls, a visible phenomena when it creates particular weather condition linked to the presence of the water vapor. The rainbow is presented like an integral part of the landscape.

To visit the “Grotta della Condotta”it is necesary the advanced booking because the guided tour in the cave is under the control of a skilled speleological guide who leads the group in the most hidden and beautiful place to disclose the secrets. It is recommend the use of trekking or gymnastic shoes. There are many guided tours in the area.
